The fox and the girl.

WALT: use paragraphs

I dove under the fence and raced towards the nearest bird. Then I sunk my sharp teeth into the duck. Then a horrible human ran out towards me. “GHAA!” he yelled “ THE DREADED FOX” as he was ripping up weeds. He ran around the corner of a small shack at the edge of the property. When he returned he was carrying a shotgun. BANG! went the shotgun and then he started running towards me. Another lead bullet whizzed past me. With that I dive into the bush, hiding under a fallen spruce branch. Then I run. I dive through the boreal forest. Then I hear footsteps. THOSE PESKY HUMANS! Adrenalin takes control. I dive into a pile of ferns, then… THUD! something hard hits me. A human girl! “gotcha!” she yells, furious. I stare up at it and it stares at me. Then its expression changes. Its arms move up. It has let me go! A MIRACLE!

Later the weather took a turn for the worst. At first, it was cold, but then it started snowing. The spruce trees started frosting up. Then I hear a loud THUMP! I look around to see the human girl unconscious, probably hypothermia. With the temperature dropping, there is no chance of her survival. Because she saved me, I decided to return the favor. I leap through the bushes, to her. Then I keep her warm by acting like a scarf, trapping heat in. Now she will survive. Now the big question is will I survive?

One cold stormy night later…

I am still with the girl, who is still breathing. Then two humans come from a shrub. The oldest one is leaning on a shotgun. The other one races towards the girl, so I dive behind a log. The younger human picks up the girl, who smiles at me. The humans then leave. I dive back to the bushes, to get to my family as the humans climb the last hill to there home.

Boy on a bike

WALT: use google draw to create a scene from a text

First we read a story called ‘Boy on a Bike’ written by Bronwen Wall. It was about a boy travelling the length of the North Island, on a fat bike, to raise money for the St John Ambulance service.

fat bike = A bike which has wheels that are so fat that the bike doesn't sink in sand, mud and snow. Fat bikes are very safe and perfect for travelling off road.

Finding fractions of numbers

This is how you do fractions of numbers. These are the numbers: 1/3 of 27, 1/6 of 36 and 1/10 of 50. To work it out you need to divide the numbers like this: divide 27 by 3. That is 9 so the fraction is 9. If it was 2/3 instead of 1/3 the answer would be 18 because it doubles.

Fractions

Ratios

To find the ratio of something you need to count them. This is an example: I have a new Lego spaceship. It has 5 blue bricks and 1 purple brick. The ratio is 5/1. But I want more spaceships so I buy 3 more. The ratio is 20/4 OR 5/1. This is because ratios can be changed.

Main star - Cook a meal

Today I cooked dinner and pudding. For dinner I made slow cooked steak. The steak was cooked up with carrots, onions and cherry tomatoes. I cut the carrots and tried to cut a tomato but the tomato exploded. Dad cut the rest of the tomatoes and the onions. Then we added the steak (we chopped that, too) and also a can of tinned tomatoes. (we didn't chop these) Then we put everything in the slow cooker. Later I will serve it with rice. For pudding I made creme caramel. To make it I had to do the dishes first. Then we started making it. But straightaway we had a problem. No ordinary sugar. Of course we could have mixed up carbon, oxygen and hydrogen but we didn't have any hydrogen lying around so we mixed up unrefined sugar and icing sugar. When we finished making them up we had to put them in ramekins in the oven, the ramekins in a big tray and the tray filled with water?! We could have gone to the supermarket and brought creme caramel but we made it. WHY? Not because it wouldn't be main stars (it sort of is) but because we need to learn how to cook so we can eat. It is important to learn how to cook! That is why I cook every Sunday. Some of the things I have cooked are Pizza and Butter chicken.

Mum: I thought it was really yummy and the creme caramel was difficult to make and you did a really great job

Billie: I thought that it as so great that I wanted 3 helpings. I had two helpings. IT WAS SO YUMMY.

Kiwi kids news

Today I did the kiwi kids news quiz. This was my result:

The most interesting question for me was about the Wanaka earthquake. I thought it was interesting because I like researching earthquakes and monitor GeoNet. It was a 5.8 on the richer scale. I also predicted there would be an earthquake in Christchurch and I was right but it was only tiny - 3.0 - on the Richter scale!

The somme

The Somme
By Jimmy

I hate the trenches. They are muddy and stinky. And there are millions of rats. I am with my friend Yotam here. I am holding my rifle, ready to shoot. Then I see something coming. Something red and heading straight towards me. “RUN!” I yell. Me and Yotam Dive out of the trench. “GET BA…” yells the commander but he never finishes his sentence as a shell incinerates the trench. Me and Yotam run through dead trees. Dirt flies around us. It is a machine gun! But the shooters are missing on purpose. Then I hear someone yell “get into the camp!” Me and Yotam run in and are greeted by a soldier. “Get in!” he yells. In the camp there is a big fire, cooking our dinner. There are also canvas tents. After dinner me and Yotam head to the tent. Then there is a rumbling sound. I instantly turn around to find a tank heading towards the camp! “Run!” yells the commander. Me and Yotam run into the dead trees. The tank advances on us. In between the dead trees are machine guns. The commander told us about them. I get behind one, take aim, and pull the trigger. BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! fire erupts from the barrel. I pull out the round. Then something cold and hard presses the back of my head. I pull my arms up. Then the soldiers lead me and Yotam away.

When I wake up the next day I am in a prisoner of war camp. Yotam is next to me. Then the germans guarding me give me a box. “To You” he grunts. Yotam also gets a box. On it it says “open in a weeks time” so I put it away. One week in a prisoner of war camp is torture. It is almost as bad as the trenches. After one week I open the biscuits. In it there is a message saying. The raisins are burnt and crunchy. I didn’t like burt raisins so I pulled them out. Then Yotam Nudged me. “the raisins are gold nuggets” he whispered. I quickly pulled out the gold and when I got it all out it formed a pile. “What that” grunted the german on guard “Gold” I said quietly “you can have it if we get 5 minutes outside. “ok” he grunted and opened the door. As soon as I was let out I grabbed a rifle from the rack and stuffed all the ANZAC biscuits in my mouth and ran. I couldn't load the rifle so instead I just whacked it over the head of anyone I came across. I ran into a tent to grab a revolver but instead I found something else. A secret plan! I grabbed it and a revolver on the table. Then ran. Yotam followed me. As I ran a Soldier stopped me. I thought he was going to shoot me but then he yelled “GET IN THE TANK”. He was an allied soldier. I jumped into the tank with Yotam and we drove away. On the way back I showed him the information. As it turned out, It was very useful… 2 years later… On my return to new zealand with Yotam we both had ww1 medals, everyone did. But I had another medal for finding the plans. I am so happy to be home…
