Percy Jackson

This books genre is adventure because Percy goes on an adventure in camp half blood to find Zeus's lighting bolt.

In the book, everything was going fine until Percy accidently vaporized his maths teacher and attacks a minotaur and wins!

My favourite part was when Percy returns the lightning blot to Zeus and his father tells him that he has water powers.

Worlds Worst Nuclear Disasters

WINDSCALE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, ENGLAND

The windscale power plant was one of the first nuclear power plants built and was very faulty. It was build because Britain wanted to keep up with the United States Of America and make nuclear bombs.

PARAGRAPH

In the faulty nuclear power plant everything was going normal, the operators thought. But there was a problem the temperature sensor and they could only see the temperature in part of the reactor core, where the energy is made, and not seeing all of the temperature is fatal.

PARAGRAPH

The operators realise the temperature is wrong… too late. BOOM! Fires start. The reactor threatens to explode with the worst disaster possible, a meltdown, like what happened at Chernobyl plant.

PARAGRAPH

To stop the fire the operators order their men to push fuel rods down the channels to move them away from the fire, but the rods had bent because of the heat and were stuck. Eight brave men, dressed in protection suits pushed the burnt fuel rods down their channels away from the fire and it stops spreading but does not go out.

PARAGRAPH

To inspect the fire the operator Tom Tuohy climbed up to the inspection port and he could see a blue fire, the hottest fire, and the operators decide what to do.

PARAGRAPH

The operators decide to pump carbon dioxide (CO 2) on the fire and they hope that the gas will cut of the oxygen (0 2) and smother the fire to put it out. The operators pump carbon dioxide on the fire but the fire burns on.

PARAGRAPH

The operators decide to pump water on the fire, but it could produce steam which could turn into oxygen (0 2) and hydrogen (H 1) and blow the roof of the reactor. The operators turn on the hoses and a trickle of water hits the fire and… no explosion happened! The hoses are turned up and run for thirty hours. Windscale is safe!

PARAGRAPH

The heroes are the people who worked their, especially the eight brave men who pushed the fuel rods along their channels.

CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER PLANT,UKRAINE, USSR

Chernobyl plant had 4 reactors and was in good condition, apart from 1 careless worker…

The disaster started with a test in reactor 1 and they powered up the test and slowed down the speed of the reactor and then sped it up. The test should have stopped BUT the careless worker didn't stop it. In thirty minutes there was FIVE fuel rods. The minimum safe is thirty. The operator realized and whispered his not appropriate last words.

BOOM!! SMASH!! BOOM!! CRASH!! THUD!! BANG!! BOOM!!

The explosion rocketed through the plant, it had reached meltdown and there was nothing anybody could do to stop it.

The roof explodes and showers lumps of concrete and deadly reactor core made of uranium (U 92) and plutonium (PU 94). Ambulances and helicopters come to help and they try to pull workers out of the fifteen fires. Helicopters pour sand on the fires, trying to put them out.

The two closest towns Chernobyl and pripyat are evacuated. They take only what they can carry. They will never go home because it is so radioactive. It is so radioactive that it will glow green at night.

PARAGRAPH

The helicopters kept dropping sand on the fire trying to smother the fire and finally they do it!!! Only the reactor is still burning. After a while most of the pilots were too sick to carry on. They will probably get cancer or another disease.

PARAGRAPH

Finally they put out the fire. A huge cloud of radioactive waste drifts towards Europe and there are many concerns about food poisoning from vegetables and milk.

The “Impossible clean up” and “Evacuate” begins and a 64 kilometer dead land around Chernobyl is made. A huge concrete coffin is made around chernobyl.

The 64 kilometer dead land is made, exception only given for… the people who work there… the other reactors are still working.

The main problem with nuclear disasters is secrecy because they want to not be disgraced by other countries but hiding things can be bad because in windscale it was four days before people got proper warnings not to drink milk.

My Dad The All Black

This books genre is mystery because Will McCann, a rugby player tries to find out what actually happened the night that his father, Dennis McCann, an all black, died.

In this book Wills granddad Neville, died and he meets his uncle Jim, who has stayed isolated is a small fishing village because he has a troubled past. When Will investigates he finds out more about what happened when his father died.

My favourite part was when uncle Jim gives Will his fathers old rugby ball and told him about his father and shows him some old photos about what they were like as kids and Jim tells Will about some of their money-making schemes.   

Going Solo

This books genre is biography because it is about Roal Dhal in the RAF and in shell oil company in Africa.

In this book Roal Dhal goes to Africa with the oil company shell. in Africa Roal Dhal finds a Black Mamba snake, a Green Mamba snake and a Lion! Later he joins the RAF in Greece and fights the enemies in a hurricane!

I think that you should read this book because it is very interesting and shows you lots about his life, from running from lions and snakes to flying in one of the greatest warplanes in a secret mission.

Kiwi Kids News - Aaron Cruden Misses Flight

All black First-Five Aaron Cruden has missed a flight to Argentina after having dinner with team mates the night before and then missing his flight to Argentina.

Beauden Barrett will probably take his place as First-Five and wear the number 10 jersey.

The Great Trade-Off Game

Today for maths we have been playing a maths game called the great trade off game. This is how you play: 
You start off with 5 free time tokens, 3 fun and 3 money and then you roll the dice to get a goal to reach, then taking turns you move around the board to try and achieve your goal. We played in small groups and in my group was me, Max and Nina. Me and Nina had a tie and we got close to getting our goals.

We did this game for PrEP and these are some other things we learnt about and the activities we did:
We did studdyladder for lots of tasks about financial literacy
We did activities in the financial literacy book about saving for a holiday of a family.
We did where we had to plan for a holiday in small groups. In my group was Me, Ella and Alex and we were saving for a trip to the Greek islands.
Today we did the great trade off game!

In the numbing fog, a shape appeared, it was a house and there was a huge shape behind it. The shape was as big as a small apartment. Its green branches swayed in the cold breeze. The house was like a hut. I pushed a door, which was more like a rusted piece of steel. I stepped inside the old shack and the floorboards creaked and could give way. My face was blue and purple. I walked forward to investigate the hut and something hot hit my face and I slipped down and I hit the floorboards which finally gave way and I fell down a shaft at least 5 meters down. At the bottom was a shaft, complete with minecart rail and minecart. I jumped in and I hit the stand just before I realised that I ran out of track and there was a huge hole in the track “WHY MEEEEEEE!!” I yelled as My minecart hit the bottom and it zoomed downhill “ARRRRRRGGGG!” I yelled and I saw the end. sharp obsidian rocks. I smashed into the obsidian and a huge shard came flying at me. BEEP BEEP BEEP. I woke up. I was alive! until I saw the red bundle of things saying Dynamite. KABOOM! It detonated and threw everything everywhere I was thrown the way I came by the explosion I came and was under the hole in the floorboards. I climbed up the shaft and at the top was the room that I explored first. There was a sound of metal on rock. I slowly walked outside to find the sound, I carefully walked around the corner and there it wasn't! All I saw was a whitebait net. I tried to pull it out off the swampy river but I pulled myself in! The river was deeper than I thought but I found a shallow spot! I walked there but the river started rising? That was when I realised that I was standing in quicksand! “HELP” I yelled but no answer came until a person walked out of the bush from behind the rusted heap and he carried a huge barrel boasting the words “warning quicksilver” “MERCURY!” I yelled and he undid the top and poured the  mercury into the river. Just in case you don’t know mercury (or quicksilver) is highly toxic and will kill people easy. The mercury hit the river and the river turned blood red. I couldn't decide what was worse, dying of quicksand or quicksilver then a strange tug came as the blood red liquid hit me and I remembered that mercury made you float. I came to the top of the quicksilver contaminated water and I took a huge breath but I swallowed lots of quicksilver! AAARRRGGG! I yelled on the river bank as the mercury sank in and forced my life out and I died.

Not.

First aid kits are very useful.

It had a counter-quicksilver serum.

YAY!

This book is adventure because a boy called Cosmo Hill escapes the horrible academy but things go wrong...

Cosmo tries to escape by jumping off a building BUT a strange blue THING is sucking the life out of him UNTIL a gang of kids blast the thing into bubbles!?

My favourite part was the end because they find out, SPOILER ALERT, that the "things" only take pain away, not life!

Campfire story - completed

Crack! the fire cooked the marshmallow too much and it blew up. “Urrr” Complained the boy who was called Dillon. He tried to get another one but a strange rustling noise came from the bush. Dillon hugged the bag of marshmallows just as a wild cat jumped on Dillon. Dillon hit the wild cat and the wild cat bit him. Dillon saw the face of it and realized that it was a wild cat, probably an ocelot or a lynx. “a wild cat!” the boy whispered, just as it clawed him and Dillon pinched it hardly. The bush rustled again and Dillon thought it was the cats’ family coming but instead it was… Nigel?! Nigel was the camp leader and he was VERY Angry. “It wants your marshmallows” yelled Nigel “Give it some”. Dillon Threw some marshmallows at it and it ran away into the bush. Dillon Started cooking marshmallows and had So much fun on camp
